This is a link to a new article that explores the ways in which the rise of the Solidarity independent trade union in the Polish People’s Republic in 1980-81 created conditions for architectural critique in Poland and in Hungary. It was commissioned by the Jencks Foundation for its excellent online publishing platform. Other great commissions in this expanding series – called ‘Isms and Wasms: 1980 in Parallax’ include a brilliant essay by Owen Hatherley on the late Ryuichi Sakamoto and another by Lidia Klein on ‘Plaza de la Constitución, Post-Modernism, History and Propaganda in Pinochet’s Chile‘ and an interview with Raqs Media Collective by Eszter Steierhofer.
